David Walliam's "Gangsta Granny," a successful British comedy fiction book for children, has been adapted for the stage. Debuting in the West End in summer of 2017 at the Garrick Theater, the production is being staged by Birmingham Stage Company as part of their 25th anniversary celebration. The show has already been nominated for Best Show for Children and Young People for a UK Theatre Award. The Garrick Theatre run will last until September 2017 followed by a tour of other theaters and performance spaces throughout the UK. Walliams told the press he was delighted his popular book was appearing in the West End. He said it was the most popular book he had ever written and was excited to see the Birmingham Stage Company adaptation of his work.

The Gangsta Granny stage production is based on the popular 2011 children's book by author David Walliams. It is the story of a child named Ben who hates staying at his grandma's house because the entire time is spent playing board games and eating cold cabbage soup. This boredom is exacerbated by his grandmother's false teeth, gray hair and her habit of sticking tissues in her sleeves. His attitude changes when he discovers that his grandmother used to be an international jewel thief. Not only that, her bucket list goal was to steal the crown jewels in the Tower of London, which she had never been able to do during her illustrious career. "Gangsta Granny" captured the Red House Children's Book Award and was turned into a movie that aired on BBC One in December 2013. Walliams is a well-known comedian, presenter, actor and writer, possibly best known as half of the comedy duo he shares with Matt Lucas, appearing on a number of television comedy shows including Come Fly with Me, Little Britain and a Rock Profile.
Walliams star rose even higher when he took on the role of a judge on the popular ITV television program, Britain's Got Talent.
