Foals: from math rock to hard rock

After breaking away from previous groups, Yannis Philippakis, Jack Bevan, Jimmy Smith, Walter Gervers and Edwin Congreave came together in 2005 with the intention of having more fun with their music. By 2007, they had cultivated a math rock sound that would be evident in first singles "Hummer" and "Mathletics", the latter of which featured on TV drama Skins. Merging elements of techno with a staccato guitar sound, debut album Antidotes was released in 2008 and saw great commercial success, along with giving the group their first top five hit in the UK album charts. Stemming from Philippakis' fascination with futurology, the band's second album had a distinctively scientific feel with its title, Total Life Forever, drawn from Ray Kurzweil's theory of singularity. Single "Spanish Sahara" was a stand-out success and propelled the five piece into the spotlight after it featured on shows from Entourage to Outcasts and Misfits. Furthermore, the album was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize before the group headed back to the studio.

Re-emerging in 2013 with Holy Fire, the band cited influences ranging from voodoo to Haitian rhythms and revealed that their recording sessions involved a few unconventional moments, such as making percussion instruments out of bones. Praised for its uninhibited sound, the record hit the number two spot in the UK charts, spawned singles such as "Inhaler" and "My Number" before being nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize. As their fame rose, so did the size of the venues in which they would play electrifying live sets. 2015 saw them return not only with new album What Went Down, which takes on a new and improved hard rock sound, with a fifth album in the works.
