The forefront of American motor racing
The fastest growing city in the United States, Austin is the capital of the south-central state of Texas. Officially hailing itself as the live music capital of the world, this unique city is beginning to make a new name for itself in the world of Formula One racing. The United States Grand Prix has been held on and off since 1908, where it was initially known as the American Grand Prize before joining the Formula One world championship. The 48 official races held as of 2018 have taken place in 10 separate locations, from Watkins Glen, New York, throughout the 1960s and 70s, to Phoenix, Indianapolis and eventually Austin, to where it moved in 2012. The circuit, called the Circuit of the Americas, actually lies around 12 miles below Austin and is also host to the Motorcycle Grand Prix of the Americas and a round of the Motorcycle Road Racing World Championships, although it was the first circuit in the United States to be built purposefully for Formula One. Legendary German circuit architect and engineer Hermann Tilke assisted in the design the track, consisting of 20 sweeping corners over 3.4 miles of road. Tilke is also the brains behind the Sepang International Circuit, home to the Malaysian Grand Prix, and the Yas Marina Circuit of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Conceived by the best minds in racing, the Circuit of the Americas brings out the best in the world's finest drivers, providing an action-packed experience in a wonderful American city. Hamilton has also won the British Grand Prix five times and the entire world championship a stunning four times.
