Doug Benson's career milestones
Raised as a Methodist in San Diego, Benson started to perform regularly as a stand-up comic, aged 22. He had previously taken to the stage a few times at one-off gigs and claims that his first ever appearance took place because a friend dared him to try. During the early part of his career, Benson would often share the stage with like-minded comedians, such as Greg Proops or Brian Posehn. It was around this time that Benson began to smoke marijuana, a drug he has advocated legalising ever since. It is a major source of his inspiration in comedy.
Benson first gained the attention of a wider audience when he started to appear on TV shows. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he featured on programmes such as the A-List and Two Drink Minimum, which both aired on Comedy Central. He also contributed as a writer to the MTV show Trashed, which was popular in the mid-1990s. Around this time, Benson co-wrote and performed in the stage show the Marijuana-Logues. In 1998, he got an acting role when he was featured in an episode of the hit situation comedy, Friends.
Over the next decade, Benson continued to gain roles in shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and Yacht Rock, a spoof documentary. Benson also made a documentary film about marijuana, named Super High Me, in which he starred. In 2007, Benson took part in the fifth season of Last Comic Standing, a knockout talent show for professional comedians.
In November 2010, Comedy Central gave Benson his own show, called the Benson Interruption. The programme basically took a live stand-up showcase format and included a number of guests on each episode. Benson's guests included Chris Hardwick, Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Nick Kroll, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Eugene Mirman, among others. The writer and stand-up continues to perform and come up with new material, as well as producing podcasts in front of a live audience.
