While he remains one of country music's leading lights now, in his 70s, the man known as the "Gentle Giant" of his genre due to the contrast between his soft baritone voice and large, imposing build kicked off his solo career in the early 1970s. He had previously been a member of the Pozo-Seco Singers, but couldn't contain his talent in a band anymore so made the leap to perform under his own name in 1971. His first hit came four years later, when 'We Should be Together' made him a star, kicking off decades-worth of fame. By 1980 he had clocked up 11 Number One singles on the US country music chart, with 'I Believe In You' the latest at that point. Later, in 2006, he shocked the world by announcing a 'farewell tour', wowing audiences as he bowed out with a sold-out US tour.
