Deerhoof's experiments in musical styles
Emerging from the San Franciso area in the mid-1990s, Deerhoof's playing style and choice of music has changed and shifted along with the make-up of the band. Critics struggle to define their sound; everything from indie rock, punk, experimental pop and classic rock 'n' roll features. What does not change is their sense of adventure and absolute commitment to what they are doing. Founding drummer Greg Saunier continues to pepper the band's distinctive live sets with a series of funny monologues and surrealist banter, aimed at the audience, in between songs. Bassist and singer Satomi Matsuzaki joined up soon after arriving in the USA from Japan, with no previous musical experience. She continues to experiment wildly, as do Deerhoof, with offbeat instruments, including toys and improvised devices. Expect to experience mythical lyrics, maximum volume and minimal stage equipment. Guitarists John Dietrich and Ed Rodriguez complete the quartet. Deerhoof's material is influenced by everyone from The Beach Boys and English new romantics such as Spandau Ballet and Boy George, to Brazilian Tropicalia from the 1960s and music of the Congo. When you purchase or offload Deerhoof tickets via StubHub, you can stir this intriguing melting pot a little more.
