Trivia
In addition to touring and performing on dozens of albums, Sanborn has also had success in broadcasting. In the '80s and '90s, he hosted a syndicated radio show called The Jazz Show with Dave Sanborn. Between 1988 and 1990, Sanborn brought jazz to millions of TV viewers on his show Night Music. The program was produced by Lorne Michaels, of Saturday Night Live fame. It featured video of jazz legends, interviews, and live performances.

David Sanborn is a Grammy Award-winning saxophone player with more than 20 albums to his name. He is admired for his emotional playing and accessible commercial sound. He was born in Florida in 1945 and grew up mostly in St. Louis. When he was three years old, he contracted polio, and began playing saxophone as part of his recovery. He progressed very quickly and played with blues legends like Albert King in his teens. Sanborn studied music at Northwestern University and then the University of Iowa, where he worked with JR Monterose. In the mid-1960s he moved to California and joined the Butterfield Blues Band, performing with them at events like Woodstock. After that, he toured with Stevie Wonder and appeared on his album Talking Book. Around this time, he also toured and recorded with iconic jazz pianist Gil Evans. Over the years, he has recorded with many pop and rock legends including David Bowie, Paul Simon, Chaka Kahn, and James Taylor. In the early 1970s, he left California and moved to New York to launch his solo career. In his solo records, he has collaborated with an amazing array of artists including Bill Frisell, Wallace Roney, Christian McBride, and Eric Clapton.
Breakthrough
Dave Sanborn was a successful touring musician and session man for several years before launching his solo career. In 1975, he released his first solo album, Taking Off, on the Warner Brothers label. The album had a dance feel; it was a commercial success that raised his profile significantly.
Hit Albums
Sanborn also found success with his second album, Hideaway. This 1979 release included the single 'Seduction', which was featured in the film American Gigolo. Two years later, he released Voyeur. This album featured bass player Marcus Miller and included the Grammy-winning single 'All I Need is You'. Sanborn collaborated with vocalist Luther Vandross in 1983 on the album Backstreet. In 1988, he won another Grammy for the album Close Up. His 1990s albums include Pearls (1995) and Insight (1999). Sanborn's recent records include Enjoy the View (2014) and Time and the River (2015).
