Born David Jones in South London in 1947, the fledgling Bowie impressed with his artistic abilities from a young age in dance classes and choir sessions. He formed his first band at the age of 15 and by 1964 was releasing his debut single 'Liza Jane' under the name Davie Jones. Eventually assuming his current moniker, by the end of the decade he was established as a minor pop performer - albeit one largely indistinguishable from other singers of the time.

Keen to stand out, by the 1970s he had earned a reputation not only for his unique look and influential sound, but the way he moved with the times. Assuming the persona of Ziggy Stardust in 1974 for the classic album of the same name catalysed a chain of events that saw the artist try on a succession of conceptual identities, from Aladdin Sane to the Thin White Duke to his slightly more conventional guises in the '90s and '00s.

After selling 140 million albums and defining multiple eras, many believed Bowie's career was over after he suffered a heart attack while promoting the 2003 LP A Reality. Rarely seen in public, his health and future endeavours remained a mystery until his surprise return in 2013 with new material and renewed sense of purpose.
