The birth of a continental competition
Established in 1916, the South American Football Competition was formed to create a platform on which the very best national teams could compete against each other. This provided the rare opportunity for international teams to face off against each other, as the CA was founded more than a decade before the first Football World Cup. Fans understandably fell in love with the concept straight away, filling out stadiums and cheering on the pride of their nation. The inaugural competition was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina and was played between the Brazil National Football Team, Uruguay National Football Team and Chile National Football Team. Following a very positive reception from fans and players, the CA was then held in Montevideo, Uruguay, the following year. Soon after, more nations joined the competition, the first being Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru. In 1930, the success of the South American Football Competition was undoubtedly a major inspiration for the establishment of the Football World Cup. World-class atmosphere
Because of the distinctive footballing strength throughout the South American continent, the CA has often been a representation not only of the best teams in the continent, but also the best teams in the world. Strong rivalries have developed between the countries, resulting in some of the most intense atmospheres ever witnessed within sporting arenas. An infamous riot took place during the final game of the 1916 competition between Argentina National Soccer Team and Uruguay, causing the match to be abandoned and rescheduled. A century later, the modern stadium management and increased security have limited the risk of violent behaviour, however cultural significance and patriotism is as solid as ever. A proud Chilean businessman famously paid for 40,000 Chilean flags so that every attendee of the CA final could fly the national colours. Perhaps the flags worked, as the Chilean team claimed their second South American Football Championship win against Argentina.
