A four-piece band from Leeds, Clay is made up of Joe and Jack Harvey, two brothers, plus Rob Gration and Danny Armitage. The brothers are the mainstay of the band's songwriting team, who pen original songs that often reflect their mutual desire to make a big splash on the music scene. Indeed, members of Clay have gone on record as saying that they all have a deep desire to go stratospheric and see more of the world than they might otherwise expect. An early single “Stay Calm!” was announced as Track Of The Day by Clash magazine, helping to raise the band's profile considerably.
Clay's career milestones
The Harvey brothers had been writing music together for a few years but had no real intentions of releasing any of their studio work. After Gration and Armitage joined in, however, Clay was officially born as a serious band that would tour and release tracks for the public. By their own admission, the four-piece needed to filter the array of weird and wonderful tracks that they had put together during their formative years in order to create a sound that would be accessible to new listeners, while still being novel. The innovative and Hammond organ-driven “Sun Dance” was chosen as the sort of arrangement that Clay would build their future songwriting around, as they continued to hone their style during a series of live gigs. In 2014, Clay made this song their debut release. It came out as a single, backed with “Cream”, which had an ethereal start before developing into a powerful, drumless indie track.
Two years later, “Stay Calm!” came out, a track that would be streamed tens of thousands of times on sites such as SoundCloud and Spotify. Despite building a name for themselves in the area around their home city, to many followers of new music, Clay was first brought to public attention by the radio exposure they received. The likes of Huw Stephens championed the group at BBC Radio 1, for instance. In addition, the well-respected DJ Zane Lowe has also given the band plenty of airplay on his shows on Radio X. Following the release of Heaven, a three-track EP, in 2016, the group gained even more attention by those in the know picking tracks to play over the nation's airwaves.
In 2017, Clay released “Saint” as a single, which led to a string of sell-out shows across the country. Pushing their unique blend of sounds, the group continue to write and perform all over the UK. They are fast becoming favourites on the summer festival circuit.
