Born in 1943 in New York City, Chase sustained interest in the performing arts despite being an excellent student academically, the valedictorian of his high school class and later graduating with an English major from Bard College. While in his 20s, Chase was involved in a number of different projects related to the world of comedy, including writing for National Lampoon and the Smothers Brothers, but his big break came when he performed as part of the 1974 film Groove Tube. After a top TV producer saw the film, Chase was hired for Saturday Night Live’s first season in 1975 and the rest, as they say, is history. As part of the SNL team, Chase developed a number of hilarious trademarks and became a hugely popular stage performer and comedian.
