Based on the classic 1964 children's novel by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory revolves around the story of a young boy named "Charlie," who earns a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the eccentric and reclusive candy maker Willy Wonka for a tour of his chocolate factory. The musical adapts story elements from the book, the beloved 1971 film and the more recent 2005 Tim Burton film. It also contains a mixture of classic music from the film and original music composed exclusively for the musical. Marc Shaiman, who composed the original music for the stage adaptation, had previously won a Grammy and Tony Award for the 2002 musical, Hairspray, as well as an Emmy Award for his composition of the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. A World of Pure Imagination

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a British production, officially opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London on May 17, 2013. Sam Mendes, who earned an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for the 1999 film, American Beauty, was the director of the West End production while Peter Darling provided choreography. The musical later made a Broadway debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on April 23, 2017. As recognition for its achievements, the original West End production received seven nominations from the prestigious 2014 Laurence Olivier Awards. It won two awards for Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design. The British Whatsonstage.com Awards nominated the musical six times. It won for Best Set Designer and Best Choreography. The Broadway production won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Puppet Design. It also received an additional nomination from the Drama League Awards for Distinguished Performance.Back to Top
