Magnificent cultural meaning
A Grade II-listed building on the UK Heritage List, the magnificent structure of Central Hall was constructed from 1905 to 1911 on the site of another entertainment complex. The Royal Aquarium, Music Hall and Imperial Theatre had had marginal success until 1903, but it was time to do something different. 1914 saw the Suffragette Movement hold meetings within the hall, and, incidentally, scenes from the 2015 film "Suffragette" were also filmed here. Over the past century many people have crowded together to listen to prominent speakers of their day, such as Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, to name only a few. The first United Nations General Assembly took place at Central Hall in 1946, during which time the Methodist congregation relocated themselves to the Coliseum Theatre. In 1968 Andrew Lloyd Weber entertained a public audience for the very first time and the BBC’s New Year’s Eve Concert has become an annual event.
