Celta Vigo becomes celebrated as EuroCelta
Celta’s name goes all the way back to the Galician region’s ancient roots, a reference to the Celtic tribes that once settled the area. The club was founded in 1923 and to this day plays its home games at its original (albeit upgraded) stadium, Estadio Municipal de Balaidos, which the archpriest of Fragaso opened and blessed in 1928. The very first game there was against Real Union, which the hosts gratefully won in emphatic fashion. This was indeed a true portent for the club, as it wasn’t long before it began a roughly 80-year run in the top Spanish league, continuing into the modern era. In a few years from the late 1990s, the team was nicknamed “EuroCelta” by the media, thanks to their success in European competitions. They reached the quarter-finals in back-to-back years, beating such footballing giants as Liverpool, Benfica and Juventus FC during their run, keeping the latter two goalless. In 2016, they went one better, making the semi-finals for the first time but losing to Manchester United FC.
Derby action with Celta Vigo match tickets
Despite their league and European success, the club hadn’t managed to win the premier Spanish cup competition, Copa Del Rey, by the first decades of the 21st century. They made the final three times, though, and also played in a final when it was still known as Copa del Generalisimo. Unfortunately, they lost this one too, going down 4-1 to a rampant Sevilla FC. To add insult to injury, they lost their star striker, Pahino, who’d won the Pichichi Trophy that year to Real Madrid CF at the end of the season. Despite this, their real rivalry is with their neighbouring club, Real Club Deportivo de La Coruna, known as the Galician derby. If you’re on the hunt for Celta Vigo tickets on StubHub, make a note of these games for some passionate footballing action.
