Opening acclaim and successful awards seasons
The modern stage classic was written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner, with a score by American composer Jeanine Tesori. It's written in through-composed style, with non-repetitive, continuous musical numbers of blues, folk, Motown and klezmer genres weaving their way throughout the highly original story. It was initially workshopped at New York's Off-Broadway Public Theater - Newman Theater in 1992. Tony Award winning director George C. Wolfe opened the musical at the same theatre in 2003, where it ran until 2004 before being transferred to Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre. The Broadway run featured 'All My Children' star Tonya Pinkins in the leading role, supported by Anika Noni Rose (who won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical in 2004) and Harrison Chad ('Tarzan 2', 'Dora the Explorer'), and was highly acclaimed despite its short stint, earning six Tony Award nominations. It soon came to London's National Theatre in 2006 and picked up the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. A revival hit the West End in 2018 for a limited run, so buy Caroline, or Change London tickets through StubHub fast, before they sell out!
A story of friendship and change
Caroline, or Change is the story of Caroline, a Louisiana maid poorly paid by the Gellman family as she spends day after day in the laundry basement of their home. Caroline develops a relationship with Noah, the Gellmans' young son, who takes to visiting Caroline whenever he can sneak away from Rose, his strict new stepmother. Unable to give Caroline a raise to help with her own family, Rose tells her that she can keep any money she finds in Noah's pockets, which he is prone to forgetting about. Noah, upon hearing about the deal, purposefully leaves money for Caroline, who feels terrible upon taking the money even though she has no choice. Set against the backdrop of the Kennedy assassination and a changing cultural climate, new things are coming, but is there a limit to how much they really can? Directed by Michael Longhurst and starring Lauren Ward (Matilda: The Musical) and Alastair Brookshaw alongside the magnificent Sharon D. Clarke and a whole host of fabulous support, Caroline, or Change is an original musical masterpiece that simply can't be missed.
