The best players battle it out
The Canary Wharf Squash Classic was born as a tournament in 2004. It started as an invite-only event, with the best eight male squash players in the world battling it out in this first edition, and took place at Canary Wharf at East Wintergarden. By 2006, the tournament joined a Professional Squash Association World Tour, a round-the-world event which includes over 200 tournaments around the world, with over 800 players listed and ranked every month based on their performance. This involved changes in the format of the tournament, which started including 16 players and qualifying rounds. The number of sets in a game was also reduced from a ‘best of seven’ to a ‘best of five’ format. English players dominated the tournament for the most part in its first 15 years, with James Willstrop, the first ever winner in 2004, going on to win an extra three titles, of which he was the runner up for another three years. One of his main competitors was Nick Matthew who won a total of six titles between 2010 and 2017. The two battled each other in the finals of other tournaments such as the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010, and the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions Squash in 2012. A squash tournament not to be missed
Squash finds its origins in the game of rackets, which used to be the game of choice in the prisons of London in the 18th century. This might explain its format, while its matches are fascinating to watch as you try to follow the super quick movements of the players and the ball. So buy or sell your Canary Wharf Squash Classic tickets on StubHub and be part of the action!
