Bristol City: the record breakers who started with a small budget
Nicknamed "The Robins", Bristol City Football Club were originally formed in 1894 as Bristol Southend. It wasn’t until 1897 that they changed their name to Bristol City. At that time, a historic meeting was held in the Albert Hall in Bedminster to decide on the future of the club. Their first manager was Sam Hollis, who was given a generous budget of £40 to assemble a team. In those early days they set a number of records, including a run of fourteen successive wins in 1905 and thirty successive wins in 1906. Feel the bounce
After joining forces with Bedminster FC, Bristol City had two grounds: Ashton Gate and St John’s Lane. The former was finally adopted as their permanent home. The ground has suffered a succession of disasters – gales devastated the roof of South Stand in 1916, a fire destroyed the Old Stand in 1929, and then in 1941 the Luftwaffe bombed the Grandstand to destruction. Their first FA Cup Final was in 1909, but unfortunately they lost 0-1 to Manchester United. They have made it to both the FA Cup and League Cup (now known as the Football League Trophy) semi-finals. They won the Welsh Cup in the 1930s, the Anglo-Scottish cup in the 1970s and then finally the Football League Trophy. In recent times, however, Bristol City have moved constantly between the Second and Third Divisions. Their main rivals are the Bristol Rovers and Cardiff City FC – an especially long-running rivalry, as the first time they played each other was in 1897. Their theme song is "Johnson Says Bounce Around The Ground", sung to the tune of The Beatles’ "Yellow Submarine" and inspired by a quote from their 2007-2008 manager, Gary Johnson. He claimed that Bristol City could "get the whole ground bouncing" – so see for yourself when you buy or sell Bristol City tickets on StubHub.
A force within the community
