Most people don't know that rock star Meat Loaf's mega-hit 1977 album Bat Out of Hell was originally conceived as a rock opera for the stage. The album's composer, Jim Steinman, has four decades later revisited the original concept and created Bat Out of Hell The Musical. The brand new show continues its preview performances at the Manchester Opera House, which have immediately garnered rave reviews from audience members and critics alike. Popular songs from the Meat Loaf album (and its two sequels), including "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" and of course "Bat Out of Hell", are featured in bombastic style, along with a couple of original new songs. Each musical number tells part of the story of two young star-crossed lovers living in a post-apocalyptic dystopia.
Bat Out of Hell Manchester's background
Bat Out of Hell, Meat Loaf's second studio album made in collaboration with composer Jim Steinman, was released in 1977. It went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time, selling more than 43 million copies worldwide and certified 14-times platinum. In the U.K. the record stayed on the charts for an incredible 474 weeks. Meat Loaf's 1993 follow-up, Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, topped the charts in 38 countries.
Steinman, who was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2012, wrote the book, music and lyrics for Bat Out of Hell the Musical, drawing on the 1997 record's themes and hit songs. The director is Jay Scheib, whose previous works have won him prestigious Obie and Guggenheim awards.
The rock album's themes of teenage love and rebellion are transformed into an on-stage adventure set in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Obsidian. High-energy dance, rock 'n' roll swagger, shirtless bravado and plenty of dry ice define Bat of Out Hell the Musical's vibe, whilst 17 Meat Loaf songs make up the unforgettable soundtrack. The songs "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", "Dead Ringer for Love", "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad", "Bat Out of Hell" and two new songs, "What Part Of My Body Hurts the Most" and "Not Allowed to Love" together tell the story of gang leader Strat and his beautiful, forbidden love Raven. Other characters include Raven's father Falco, the ruthless ruler of Obsidian, and Strat's motley crew known as The Lost. Video performances, live motorcycles and state-of-the-art lighting effects all augment the on-stage action.
The Manchester Evening News called Bat Out of Hell the Musical "A truly staggering piece of musical theatre."
