Eight years of constant creativity and home recordings
The Los Angeles-born songwriter (real name Ariel Marcus Rosenburg) was initially encouraged to pursue a career in visual art until he discovered the music of Michael Jackson, which drastically switched his interests. In high-school, his tastes turned to metal and later The Cure, which he regularly states as his favourite band of all time. A keen collector of unofficial and bootleg records, Pink began to form criteria for what he desired in music and began experimenting with his songs and recording them on an eight-track Portastudio. What began was an eight-year period of intense and prolific musical creation and recording, where he gathered up to 200 tapes of material. These lo-fi home recordings formed the majority of his early self-releases, such as 2000's ‘The Doldrums', which were later re-released under the Paw Tracks record label of experimental pop band Animal Collective. Pink drew significant attention upon the release of 2010's ‘Before Today', which was his first album of new recordings since 2003, as well as his first recorded with a supporting band. ‘Before Today' saw great critical acclaim from a wealth of music publications and was considered one of the best albums of that year. An inspiration to budding musicians to simply start creating, Ariel Pink has come a long way since those early days. Check out all upcoming dates and buy or sell Ariel Pink tickets via StubHub!
An early pioneer of hypnagogic pop
Ariel Pink is widely regarded as one of the leading pioneers of hypnagogic pop, alongside New York artist James Ferraro. Other artists to develop the movement include Zola Jesus, Emeralds and Ducktails. The genre is focused on exploring nostalgia and childhood memory through the culture of the past and is primarily expressed through '80s analogue technology. You only need to listen to those early Ariel Pink releases to understand the term, and although his music has become more pristine and polished, he still manages to maintain those feelings and lo-fi, DIY sound that he has become so well-known for. Video games, cinema and new age/psychedelic music also help form the genre, coined by journalist David Keenan in an article for The Wire magazine. Ariel Pink produces an experience at his live shows that can become incredibly personal through this nostalgia. It's also vastly fun!
