The Anastasia musical got its start at a 2012 reading that featured entertainment legend Angela Lansbury, who reprised her Dowager Empress role from the animated film. The show then had a 2015 workshop that led to the show's world premiere at Connecticut's Hartford Stage on May 12, 2016. The show moved to Broadway and held its first preview on March 23, 2017, and its official Broadway premiere on April 24, 2017. Anastasia is a fictional tale that supposes that the Russian Tsar's daughter, Anastasia, survived the revolution in which the entire Russian Royal family was murdered by the Bolsheviks. In the story, Anastasia loses all memory of her life and lives as Anya, a street sweeper in Communist-controlled Russia. With the help of others, including two con men who were originally trying to profit from her resemblance to Anastasia, she tries to find out who she is and where she fits into the world.Crossing a Bridge
Anastasia’s Broadway run ended on March 31, 2019. The Anastasia tour kicked off on October 9, 2018, and continues to bring the award-winning show to cities throughout the country.
