Explore the long evolution of the AFL
Starting with the Victoria Football Association back in 1877 until the dawn of the premiership, the AFL has traversed a long and winding road. The schism in the late 1890s that produced the Victoria Football League commenced a long battle between the organisations for supremacy in Australia and by 1908, when Richmond became the 10th member of the VFL, there was no doubt as to who would emerge victorious. The first Victoria Football League championship trophy was awarded in 1959 and with the advent of televised sports two years earlier, quickly consolidated its hold at the top. Collingwood Magpies, a four time VFL cup winner is one of the teams in the league along with Adelaide Crows, Carlton Blues and St. Kilda Saints. The Victoria Football League would continue its reign over the Australian sport until a serious challenge was mounted by the newly created National Football League over the issue of football under lights. The VFL seceded, established funding for and created a rival 'Night Series' that would see off the competition in short order. AFL tickets are available now for purchase or sale via StubHub.
